Summary
Princess Beatrice wore an insane-looking hat to the British royal wedding on April 29 2011. Less than 24 hours after the wedding, the Facebook page Princess Beatrice's ridiculous Royal Wedding hat had over 24,000 fans and as of July 2011 has over 140,000.
Reactions
There were thousands of journalists and photographers covering the royal wedding from all over the world and it was all anyone talked about for weeks prior. Plenty of opinions on the jaunty little headpiece abounded to the great displeasure of almost everyone. The media, bloggers and internet commenters all had something to say about it. Often whilst trying desperately to find some form of entertainment from the wedding.
This chapeau represents "a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind"

It is entirely possible that this is the exact reaction she wanted. Or perhaps she just wanted a reaction of some kind.
Origins
Royal wedding attendee Princess Beatrice, the cousin of the groom, wore a crazy hat and the internet had a splendid tea-party making memes and image macros mocking this most fashionable of accessories.
Apparently fancy hats are serious business with snooty British types, so when William, the crown prince of England was married, everyone watched with baited breath and generally freaked out like it was 2012. Since the hat is rumored to have been a monster this reaction was arguably justified.
Current status
The meme did very well for about 4 days until Osama Bin Laden was killed, then like magic nobody cared any more.
Auction
The world became dissatisfied with mere Photoshop renditions of the hat, so on May 11 2011, it was announced that Beatrice would be auctioning the hat on eBay for charity.
On May 22 2011, Beatrice's hat sold on ebay for $130,000 and the money was donated to her charity the Little Bee Initiative which raises money for children in need and UNICEF.
