Pwn
- Date Found: Unknown
- Used By: Gamers, Trolls, Hackers
"Pwn", (sometimes "pwned" or "pwnt") is a form of Leetspeak most commonly used by gamers.
Common usage
Although it is believed to have stemmed from a simple typo by a gamer ("pwned" ⇨ "owned"), the word has spread across the internet and is used any time somebody "owns" somebody else by defeating them in some form. Gamers, for example, proclaim "pwned" when they shoot a rival gamer's character during a battle, trolls "pwn" somebody when they dox them on the internet, hackers "pwn" a website when they take control of it. Possibly the simplest method to "pwn" somebody is to offer them a link to some porn, the link however leading them to a Rickroll.
Its precursor and still common variant is "own", which was first used by hackers to mean one has rooted (i.e. gained administrative access) to a computer. Gaming communities popularized the more general usage.
There is no uniform way to pronounce "pwn" as it is most often encountered in text. The two most common pronunciations are (pōōn) (rhymes with "soon") which comes from pronouncing the "w" as in Welsh, and (pōn) (rhymes with "moan"). Other pronunciations include:
- (pān) (as "pawn" in chess)
- (owned) ignoring the typo
- (pwǐn) (as "pwin")
- (pwôn) (rhymes with "on")
- (pwēn) (rhymes with "queen")
- (prān) (as prawn)
- (pōnd) (as "boned")
- (pēwǐn) (as "pea win")
- (pēōn) (as "pea own")
- (pyōōn) similar to pōōn, but with a "y" sound included
