A revived experiment in creating original content

Summary

Created as a project outlined by XKCD's Randall Munroe to keep users in an IRC channel from repeating themselves or spamming the channel, /r9k/ was added as a board on 4chan on February 19th, 2008. The idea behind the board itself was to keep the denizens of 4chan from reposting images, memes, or other text more than once, enforced by a bot that would scan posts for unoriginal content and "mute" users for increasing periods of time for each infraction.

Largely successful at first, the board avoided the issues that continue to plague the /b/ board and the users who did make it their home adopted a faux "gentlemanly" manner of speaking verbosely to avoid being muted by the bot. The "Gentlemen" of /r9k/ saw themselves as superior to regular users of /b/ and for some time the board was home to varied and relatively intelligent conversation.

Origins

And then I had an idea — what if you were only allowed to say sentences that had never been said before, ever? A bot with access to the full channel logs could kick you out when you repeated something that had already been said. There would be no “all your base are belong to us”, no “lol”, no “asl”, no “there are no girls on the internet”. No “I know rite”, no “hi everyone”, no “morning sucks.” Just thoughtful, full sentences.

Current status

Over time, /r9k/ devolved from playful wordiness and philosophical or intellectual debates into posts complaining about girls, how much one hates normal people, and self-diagnosed Asperger's syndrome. It is believed that the influx of less sophisticated users was stemmed by interest in Project Chanology, with users from Digg and Enturbulation, among other sites, joining the ranks of the gentlemen. As time went by, the quality of the board severely deteriorated and moot was known to troll it quite frequently, changing the banners or title of the pages to insult the users. On January 17, 2011, he removed the board entirely, explaining that the experiment was a failure and that the more interesting aspects of it had led to the creation of other more specialized boards, such as /adv/, /sci/, and /soc/.

Shortly thereafter, several sites sprung up with their own version of /r9k/,4chon.net and Bawwchan. Since that time, Bawwchan dissolved and have left 4chon.net as the only option for Gentlemen to go to.

As of Saturday, October 22, 2011, moot revived /r9k/, redubbing it ROBOT9001.

Facts

  • By the end of its lifespan, /r9k/ was filled with the awkward, annoying people you avoid in real life.
  • /r9k/ members would refer to themselves as "betas" towards the end, as in "Beta Male". Also used Omega, Yotta and Zeta.
  • In the last days of the board, Moot temporarily messed up the links to many of the boards meaning that users would be redirected to /r9k/ often, with the names of the boards being replaced by "let's all point at ourselves and laugh" and random meme sound effects playing in the background. Users from all around gathered to explain to the users of /r9k/ why they sucked, why girls didn't like them and affirmed that they should stop wallowing in self-pity and do something about their problems.
  • It has been revived much to the pleasure of lost robots everywhere.
