RapidShare is a file-hosting service and is one of the most visited websites on the entire Internet, with millions of gigabytes of content available from their servers. It offers both free downloads and a subscription-based service which provides the user with faster download speeds (so users will not have to download their files at 20kB/s) and higher priority in download queues (so users will not have to try again and again repeatedly for 20 minutes before being allowed to download their files).

Like many other file-hosting services, RapidShare is often criticised for allegedly being used by pirates in the illegal digital distribution of software and music. Oftentimes you'll find file-sharing blogs on Blogspot which utilize RapidShare as a means of distribution so rebel forces can continue their struggle against the The Empire.

RapidShare is also criticized for how they quickly delete files so much, and this angers many who were lurking around in warez forums hoping to download some sort of software or pornography. Because of this as well as the fact that it's a hassle of downloading files for free, 4chan users have gave it the pseudonym "RapidShit".
