Summary
Ryan Cleary (aliases Ryan and ViraL) is a British computer geek and former AnonOps IRCop who was dismayed when ED closed down. In response, he founded a fake ED site. Ryan rented botnets to effectively perform DDoS attacks upon sites (including sites owned by Sony), which had the effect of making him seem like a hardcore hacker. His other past feats include DDoSing 4chan, arbitrary blogs and gaming websites. He also operated an IRC server which hosted numerous channels used by members of LulzSec.
Ryan attempted a coup d'etat of AnonOps IRC during his quest for more "internet power", and he bragged about his actions. His recent arrest came as a surprise to few.
Origins
Born and raised in Essex, UK, Ryan Cleary is your average basement-dweller, spending most of his years stuck in his bedroom. He is a former anonymous member with history of DDoS'ing websites.
Rise to fame
During 2008, Ryan, along with a couple of his buddies, DDoS'd a number of *chan-related websites such as 4chan, 7chan and AnonIB. Encyclopedia Dramatica was also a casualty. This eventually came to a halt, presumably because the private details of the perpetrators were disseminated far and wide throughout the internet and they got sick of pizza deliveries and taxis at midnight.
In recent times he has DDoSed Sony websites, caused AnonOps to self-implode, caused a "hacker" group to form "LulzSecurity" from anonymous members that decide to go back to "anonymous" once they got doxed.
Current status
Vanned as of June 21st, 2011. Is now in prison on a 32-month sentence
On March 5, 2012, Ryan Cleary was arrested again, unsurprisingly, for breaking the conditions of his bail. It is said that Cleary used to the internet around Christmas to talk to Sabu. After his arrest, he was shortly transported to the Chelmsford Prison where he was being held in custody and was expected back in court on May, 2012 with no chance of bail. Guess some people just can't live without the internet.
Now 20, Ryan Cleary was escorted into US soil indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles for one count of conspiracy and two counts of impairing computers for his alleged crimes of hacking and defacing websites such as Sony and Fox. If convicted, Cleary will face up to 25 years in prison where he'll most likely be used as a blow-up doll by the other prisoners.
In late June of 2012, Cleary, along with Topiary, pleaded guilty to their hack onslaught onto government websites as well as the websites of big corporations and admitted to being part of LulzSec. Both LulzSec members and two other hackers involved in the LulzSec hacking faced trial on April, 2013.
In mid-May of 2013, Cleary, the self-proclaimed leader of Anonymous and wannabe LulzSec hacker, was sentenced to 32 months in prison, one of the longest sentences for any script-kiddie getting involved in hacking. In addition to hacking websites, Cleary was also found "possessing indecent images of children", some of the images having children as young as six months, which he pleaded guilty of possessing.
SOCA Charges
The criminal complaint against Cleary was released on June 23 2011 prior to his appearance in magistrates court.
"On 20th June 2011 did an unauthorised act namely a Distributed Denial of Service attack against the website of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, at a time when you knew that it was unauthorised either intending by doing the act or being reckless as to whether the act would enable the operation of a computer to be impaired, access to a program or data held in a computer to be prevented or hindered, or the operation of a program or the reliability of data held in a computer to be impaired."
He was charged under the Criminal Law Act and Computer Misuse Act by the Metropolitan (Met) Police's e-crime unit.
The alleged offences were carried out from Ryan's home, in Essex
The charges against Mr Cleary include conspiring with other unknown people on or before 20 June to construct a botnet - a collection of hijacked home computers - to conduct distributed denial of service attacks.
He is also charged with making, adapting, supplying or offering to supply a botnet, intending that it should be used to commit, or to assist in the commission of a distributed denial of service attack.
An Inside View of Ryan Cleary
Following Ryan's arrest many friends and family members came forth, giving accounts of his personality and what life was like for him. These descriptions paint Ryan as both reclusive and agoraphobic (and he's available girls!). His complexion is eerily pale (even for a Brit) and toasted a healthy, slightly luminescent green by the green-on-black PuTTY skin he uses as he sits in his room all day, typing at his computer. The only words that ever escaped his mouth were computer terminology; it is highly possible that every sentence he uttered consisted purely of syntactically incorrect Visual Basic, which is quite fitting really. Recent developments in his court case have also revealed that Ryan suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. Onlookers were shocked by this development.

He is said to have constantly spoken in computer jargon and cybertalk, which his family were unable to understand.
Ryan's mother Rita, 44, said her son suffers from agoraphobia and attention deficit disorder and had not left his bedroom for four years.
Another family member, who did not want to be identified, said: "He is a recluse and he never leaves the house."
Following a suicide attempt at the age of ten, Ryan was sent to special school in Colchester.
She said Ryan would stay cooped up in his dimly lit bedroom at the family’s £300,000 detached home with only his computer and cat Columbus for company. The only time he left the room in the past six months was to use the bathroom and shower.
Ryan Cleary fits the stereotypical image of the hacker, an anti-social loner operating from his bedroom, his nefarious, fixated behaviour reflecting — it is said — a personality disorder.
Ryan's Girlfriend Amy Chapman
On July 2, 2011, a news report surfaced detailing Cleary's relationship with his girlfriend Amy Chapman.
The article details an open relationship in which the two stay up all night chatting online to each other, even in the same room.
The couple inhabit a topsy-turvy twilight world in which they cook chips or doughnuts at 3am, converse through computers even though they are sitting next to each other, and despite the fact that in theory they have an 'open' relationship, are completely faithful to one another because, as Amy says, somewhat plaintively: 'We literally don't know anyone else.'
Amy has been going out with Ryan for two years. By 'going out', what she means is staying in, in Ryan's room with him for weeks on end. She bridles at the term 'girlfriend' but says they are 'fulfilling each other's sexual needs'. 'Do you understand what a "relationship based on benefits" is?' she asks. 'There's no requirement for either party to be faithful to each other. But because I don't know anybody else, I can't be unfaithful. 'And he doesn't know anybody either. But if he wanted to get off with someone else, I'd encourage it. I'm not in the least bit jealous.' It appears to be a source of pride to Amy that Ryan does not have a romantic bone in his body. 'I'm not the romantic type,' she shrugs. Ryan has never taken her out. He has never bought her a birthday or Christmas present, although he did once present her with a 500-gigabyte computer hard drive which delighted her in a way that another girl might have been thrilled by diamonds.
She sleeps with Ryan in a double bed in his room which is suffused with the smell of stale tobacco smoke. The smoke has yellowed the once-white walls which are bare save for a lurid picture of two women in bikinis leaning on top of a man on a bed.
