Etymology
On April 7, 2003, homophobic American congressman Dick Santorum (R, Pennsylvania), in an interview with Associated Press, compared homosexuality with pedophilia, incest, and bestiality, among other things. Secks columnist Dan Savage, a notable homosexual, took exception to Santorum's association of homosecks with furries, and decided to turn the tables on the congressman by initiating a contest among his readers to create an equally grody definition for the congressman's last name, perhaps to show the congressman how it feels to be compared with something gross. The winning submission was selected in the May 29, 2003 edition of Savage's column, Savage Love.
Dick Santorum 2012
When congressman Dick Santorum decided to run for the 2012 presidency, the talk page at the Wikipedia article erupted with drama and lolz. In the span of one week, the article was blanked, an AfD was started (and closed), and the article was renamed twice. The article is an ordinary account of the events that led to the creation of the neologism, but the real drama is on the talk page, especially the archives.
