Summary

Sarkozy Was There is a meme involving photoshopping the face of French president Nicolas Sarkozy (nicknamed "Sarko") onto images of famous world events.

Origins

On February 8, 2009 Sarko uploaded a photograph of himself at the Berlin Wall in Berlin, Germany onto his Facebook account. This photo showed him with a pick, taking down a piece of the wall.

Sarko claimed that, on November 9, 1989, he traveled to West Berlin upon hearing announcements on the 6:00 AM news that a major event was going to happen. Sarko claimed that, while the Germans were smashing down the Berlin Wall, he passed through a gate to the East German side and took a piece of the wall himself. Politicians should know better than to lie about themselves, because a bunch of people exposed this as a falsehood.

First a journalist for the newspaper Libération, Alain Auffray, said that there was no advance notice that the wall was going down that could have played on the 6 AM East German news on that day and that the west Germans didn't take down pieces of the wall until the 10th. Secondly, journalists from France found videos of Sarkozy at the wall. Yes, he did visit the Berlin wall. No, he was not there on the 9th, as the footage was dated to the 16th. In fact, on the 9th Sarko was in Paris.

After Sarkozy was exposed as a liar, people sarcastically commented on online venues that Sarkozy had "filmed Neil Armstrong on the moon" and had partaken in other historic events.

This lead to major shopping of Sarko into actual images of historic events. The French media outlets reported on the shopping, leading to further interest in mocking poor Sarko.
