Summary

Single Asian Female is webcomic following the exploits of Jennie Low, a young Chinese American liberal arts major, and her loathing for white males, Asians that date whites, whites that rape Asians, and whites that stereotype Asians noted for being written by an Asian man who wasn't getting laid.

Origins

Created by Ethan Lee as a way to "facilitate discussion and raise awareness about historical and contemporary issues issues in the Asian American community", the comic focuses on Jennie; a college aged Single Asian Female learning lessons about race, gender, and class in modern America. Most of these lessons being "The white man is evil and will hurt you".

Notable Storylines

Despite the comics relatively short life, it had several memorable story arcs.

The NorCal Rapist

The earliest continuous arc, these strips focused on the characters discussing the serious and disturbing ramifications of a white man targeting Asian females for sexual assault; most of them being "It's creepy". The story ran for several months, with the rapist never being apprehended or any characters coming into contact with the fugitive.

A Date With Rob

Jennie goes against her mothers wishes and has dinner with Rob, a white man. After several stereotypical remarks, she vows never to date outside her race.

Jackie Has A Problem

Jennies friend Jackie has recently divorced her white husband. Despite repeated remarks about her own family's prejudice, Jackie comes to terms with the fact that all of her problems were caused by marrying a white man in the first place. She eventually meets a Chinese love interest over the internet.

Current status

The comic, despite its best intentions, was met with apathy among the Asian community Lee had attempted to enlighten. Reactions ranged from amusement of the unintentional humor over the comics casual racism towards non-Asians, to Lees questionable decision to market a comic about the struggles of a Single Asian Female despite not being female.

Lee pulled the site in 2008.
