Software for online voice and video chats
Summary
Skype is the primary method by which hip parents can force their unwilling children into conversations via the novelty of online communication. Anybody can operate this software, making such futuristic concepts as "video calls" a thing of the present.
Origins
Skype was initially launched in 2003. The company that developed Skype is based out of Luxembourg.
Current status
Skype currently has over 600 million registered users.
Microsoft purchased Skype in May 2011 for $8.5 billion, which many agree was too much.
Facts
- Unlike other voice communication protocols, Skype is a peer-to-peer system as opposed to a client-server system.
- Skype won the 2005 Webby Award for "Best Telecommunications"
