Socially Awkward Penguin can easily be made by anyone, and as such has somewhat of a hit-or-miss reputation.
Because most internet users are socially awkward, SAP threads usually get flooded by replies consisting of "so true, i get that all the time" posts.
Origins
Socially Awkward Penguin was spun off of Advice Dog around May 2010. It has become particularly popular on tumblr. Like many Advice Dog memes, it can be seen on many sites that have no relation to 4chan.
There was notably a drama on the Socially Awkward Penguin tumblr when a penguin referring to rape was uploaded. This was quickly taken down.
Socially Awkward Penguin has become easy to create thanks to meme generator.
