Sonic the Hedgehog
Hold right to win!
- Developer: Sega
- Release Date: 06/1991
Sonic the Hedgehog is a series of Japanese games released for the Sega Genesis (known outside the US as the Sega Mega Drive). It was also adapted into several animated series, and is an on-going comic by Archie Comics. The game series was responsible for making Sega into a competing rival with Nintendo during the 90s, but now the games are released on every platform ever since the miserable failure that was the Sega Dreamcast. Each Sonic game's plot is to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and stop Dr. Eggman/Robotnik. The main Sonic characters are prominent in furry culture due to the games being an introduction into the fandom, or are worshiped by 12-years old in the form of recolors.

Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog was your basic Saturday morning cartoon in which Sonic and Tails would play tricks, or get into hijinks, with Robotnik and his minions. What this show was really known for was the "Sonic Sez" segments of the show, in which Sonic would tell children to beware of pedophiles, washing machines, and other things. Sonic, being voiced by Steve Urkel, made these serious matters into something quite funny. Sonic Sez is essentially a minor meme and are featured in many Youtube Poops.
Sonic SatAM is a Saturday morning TV show that had a much darker and complex plot than the one mentioned above. The show is not based off the game series, but instead follows its own plot. In the show, Sonic, Tails, and other woodland friends fight an underground resistance against Dr. Robotnik's machine regime. The show is infamous for being central to the furry fandom, due to what can only be described in furry terms as sex symbol Sally Acorn (after all, Sonmanic likes, no, is infatuated, with her). Sally, and the rest of the characters, are still prominent in furry culture. Sonic SatAM never had a true conclusion (in terms of animation, there is a comic still running around), as season 2 had a cliffhanger episode and season 3 has never been produced. Though some fans continue to hope for a season 3 even though the show is 18 years old.
Sonic X is an anime that vaguely follows the events of the games, before creating its own storyline. Take a guess at what Sonic does the majority of the series (Protip: It involves Robotnik/Eggman). The series is notable for angering fans for featuring the voice acting of Jason Griffith, and angered others for simply being an anime.
The Sonic Comics follow their own complex continuity involving fighting Dr. Eggman. There are many original characters unique to the comics that would take forever to list. Only die-hard fans read the comics.
Sonic the Hedgehog was made with the full intent to rival Nintendo's Mario. Sega asked each one of their departments to for something to counter Mario, and Sonic Team (headed by Yuji Naka) came up with the first Sonic game. Sonic Team then moved to the US where the rest of the games were developed.
Currently, the game series has been circling the drain, with the lowest point being either Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 or Sonic Unleashed. Since then, Sonic Team has been attempting to "go back to their roots" but they continually piss off their fans by never actually doing so. This can range from the most hardcore complaints, such as changing Sonic's eye color, to legitimate problems, like releasing a Sonic game in episodic content. Even the remake of the first Sonic game can be said to not to be going back to the games' roots, as Sonic Team feels compelled to add new features everyone hates. But Sonic the Hedgehog will continue trudging on do the games being successful with children.
