4chan's sports board, possibly the most troll filled board on site.
Summary
/sp/ is the sports board of 4chan. Real life sports fans are known for ribbing each other about how much better their favorite team is than their friend's. /sp/ adds the internet, a neutral setting, and 4chan into the mix to lead the biggest bunch of shit talking you have ever seen.
/sp/ is known for reaction faces, being one of the few boards that still uses implying, green text, power rankings (sports related or not), jags guy, Rax Grissman, 18-1, trolling, predicting your favorite team will win the championship every single year, short term memory, and shit talking.
When games are on, /sp/ will have a thread discussing them. Since sports usually only take place during primetime, this leads to a significant portion of the day having no sports. This leads to most of the off topic threads, although they are often present during sports as well. Perhaps the most common off topic thread is OFFICIAL X POWER RANKINGS, where X can be just about anything from condiments to "underrated" biblical figures.
Origins
/sp/ had to be created for sports chat after sports discussion appeared in too many other boards and thus detracted from anime discussion. The biggest cause of this may have been 18-1, when the 2007 Patriots had an undefeated season only to lose to an inferior team in the Super Bowl. Boston has been forever embarrassed by this incident, and 18-1 remains one of the biggest /sp/ memes.
Current status
/sp/ is a middle traffic board that explodes during events such as the Super Bowl, Olympics or World Cup. Expect very inane arguments and general trolling.
