It mass mailed itself via [[e-mail]] in the year 2000, leading to server crashes across the world. The worm e-mails used the subject "ILOVEYOU," included the body text "kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me.", and included an attachment, "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.vbs" - But many people didn't see the ".vbs" since Windows on default hid file extensions. So they thought it was merely a .txt file (it is not possible for malware to reside in non-executable code, and a .txt is not executable code). Upon opening, it e-mails itself, and if you are running [[mIRC]], also tries to send itself to all of your [[IRC]] buddies. It also replaced various files (with extensions such as [[css]], hta, jpg, jpeg, js, jse, mp2, mp3, sct, vbe, and vbs) with copies of itself. It also tries to download a program, bugsfix.exe, which collects all of the saved passwords and e-mails them to the author of ILOVEYOU. The worm originated from the [[Philippines]]. The authors could not be convicted since the Philippines had no law against writing and distributing malware. against writing and distributing malware. |
