Shawn Fanning, a college kid, and John Fan … Shawn Fanning, a college kid, and John Fanning, his uncle, founded Napster. Fanning believed that using [[search engines]] and [[IRC]] to look for music was too cumbersome, and he wanted a way for people to more easily find music, so he founded Napster. Sean Parker, who would later become the public face of the company, started out as an employee. Napster's first version opened in June 1999.
Napster, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, became the go-to-place for free downloaded music. People developed their own independent Napster clients.
In 2000 Metallica filed a lawsuit against Napster. Other people followed suit. Napster's service ended in July 2001 and the company went bankrupt in 2002. 001 and the company went bankrupt in 2002.
