Social Engineering is as old as humanity itself but is often used on the internet simply because anyone can become anything (e.g. Person A (18 year old male claiming to be a fourteen year old female) exploits Item B's (30 year old pedophile) desire for cp. Item B downloads the "cp", and now is infected by a trojan.
Social Engineering is also used IRL/Internet combos. If Person A exploits the ethernet plug in Item B (Let's say it's a restraunt) then Person A may be able to gain sensitive information if he or she has the software knowledge.
