Summary
Suicide, is a serious IRL issue that causes a huge amount of drama which often extends onto the Internet. When this happens it tends to cause hilarity, hurt, outrage, lulz and huge drama. Many suicides have spawned memes such as an hero.
Suicide has always been a major problem but in recent times it has steadily gained public awareness through such means as the It Gets Better campaign which was released as a response to a spate of suicides by gay teens. These teen suicides are almost always caused by bullying and other school-related drama which is often played out on the internet.
On a few occasions, some dating back decades, suicides have been recorded and even committed on live television. This footage is inevitably uploaded to the internet and depending on the viewer can cause tremendous horror or lulz.
Despite this, suicide really is the last option to take, if at all, since it is the ultimate act of ragequitting, without the option to return to the last checkpoint or load a savegame.
Origins

Current status
Unfortunately suicide happens all the time, most people have been touched by it in some way and it is likely that this will never change.
