Summary
Tripcodes are an optional feature on many Imageboards that let users choose to create a persistent ID code for them to be identified correctly throughout the board. The typical anonymous nature of Imageboards doesnt allow for users to verify a single person. If one chooses to create a tripcode, they can then be later identified as the same person.
Tripcodes are created by first typing an optional nickname into the "name" field, placing a hash (#) symbol and then entering a password. This will create an insecure tripcode when the user posts. To create a secure tripcode, simply place two hash tags instead of one. This will create a unique tripcode that is almost impossible to duplicate.
Hateful reactions
| —One anonymous |
| —Another anonymous |
Tripcode users are generally looked down upon by the anonymous users. They are seen as attention-seekers and are defiant to the anonymous nature of chan culture.
It is worth noting that the moderators of 4chan dislike tripcode users and tripcode circlejerking. Tripcode use has been disabled on /soc/ and moderators can ban certain tripcodes from being used. Tripcode use should be limited and only used when absolutely necessary.
Origins
Tripcode use is infrequent on 2channel, but was quite common on world2ch, the first English language text and imageboard,
Current status
Frowned upon, but highly common within more cancerous boards.
