Summary
Trollface is an image used to designate trolling of some form, originating in deviantART, spread in 4chan and currently appearing on every single website on the internet.
Trollface is also seen in troll physics and many other troll related comics.
Origins
Trollface's original appearance was in the following comic.
Trollface is not a 4chan original. It does not come from YTMND, Something Awful, ED, 2ch, or any related site. The origin of trollface is none other than DeviantArt. Whynne is the original artist, his intent being to draw his own version of Rape Rodent. He did not succeed at this, but his mistake has far outgrown the thing he was trying to rip off.
Trollface did not take off until it surfaced on /v/. Trollface has since been shown to catch on easily in other parts of the Internet inhabited by stupid trolls and hangers on in various forms and especially reddit.
Trollface's ridiculous grin is scientifically proven to calm down even the tensest situation.
Trollface can also be known as coolface, though calling it this will often lead to a picture of coolface.

Current status
Overused, everywhere. Did your sports team do unexpectedly well? Photoshop a trollface on the logo. Did Sarah Palin say something ridiculous? Let's wrinkle up that face and widen that grin!
