Summary

Before the Internet, 'tweeting' was the sound that birds made, now they call it 'birdsong' or something!

Twitter is one of the largest social networking and microblogging websites, with over 200 million users and counting. It allows users to post 140 character updates ("tweets") to their profiles, either through the website, an external program on a smartphone, or via SMS. A great many of these updates are completely inconsequential and focus on the minutiae of millions of boring lives, often with an emphasis on tweeting whilst using the toilet.

Numerous celebrities have Twitter accounts, with which they post promotion material or other dull content, or through which they present their insanity to the world, as with Gary Busey or Charlie Sheen.

Twitter has played a major role in recent revolutionary uprisings in the middle east, leading to some governments attempting to block access to it and Facebook to quell opposition. This, as can be expected, only further enraged rioters.

Origins

Launched in July 2006 by Odeo as a way to communicate via SMS to small groups, it quickly caught on due in part to the SXSW festival, where it tripled in use among attendees.

Current status

Users post over 65 million tweets a day, flooding the series of tubes with torrents of mundane crap. Additionally, the US Library of Congress is backing up these tweets in hard copy, to further waste valuable resources.
