Unrealistic expectations

Don't kid yourself.

Summary

Unrealistic expectations are what everyone else but you would call your life goals, aspirations, or dreams, though they can also occur on a smaller scale. Examples include forced memes, Anonymous raids, and your dreams of dating Boxxy. As unrealistic expectations in life are common, the internet is rife with examples.

Unrealistic Expectations of Bloggers

Bloggers are perhaps the #1 victims of unrealistic expectations, often resulting in side effects most commonly including unwarranted self importance. Those who are considered a success are most deeply afflicted. Bloggers believe that what they have to say is smart, intelligent, and, most importantly, something that everyone should hear about.

Bloggers suffering from unrealistic expectations include pretty much everyone with a blog.

Unrealistic Expectations in social networking services

The main unrealistic expectation related to social networking (Facebook, Google Plus, MySpace, Friendster, Orkut, Mixi, Renren, Kaixin001) is the belief that your friends list is really a list of your friends. Other unrealistic expectations include:

  • Believing that you are exceptionally attractive (you're not).
  • Your ex-gf will ad you as a friend again someday.
  • People you haven't seen in years will think you are an interesting person who has an exciting, successful life.

Unrealistic Expectations on video hosting services

Under no circumstances should you expect any of the following to happen on video hosting services (YouTube, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Nico Nico Douga, Youku, Tudou, Google Videos):

  • Find videos that are even remotely worthy of your time and attention.
  • Find more than two low-quality pr0n videos amongst the other crap on the "Today's Most Recent Videos" pages.
  • Find anything but pageview-spammed adverts and TV clips on the "Today's Most Viewed Videos" pages.
  • Find anything but whiny vloggers and their whiny comment-spamming friends on the "Today's Most Discussed Videos" pages.
  • Anyone to give a crap about what is on the other "Most" pages.
  • Make videos that will be even remotely worthy of someone else's time and attention.
  • Reach the Top 100 most subscribed user list without being put there by a YouTube Staff member.
  • Win a video contest on YouTube. They are all rigged. Rigged! No exceptions. All of them.
  • The private stripper video you made for your boyfriend to remain private for very long.
  • Deleting the video of an alcohol-fueled rant you made about your ex-wife will stop it being reposted on YouTube for your daughter to see.
  • The "Community Advocate" to say anything other than:
    • "We are looking into it."
    • "You should contact support."
    • "It is really not my job."
    • "We have just [claims credit for something he was not part of]."
  • Anyone to care when you leave YouTube.
  • Anyone to remember you when you come back.

Unrealistic Expectations on IRC

Under no circumstances should you expect:

  • Talking to others on IRC can lead to real, meaningful friendships.
  • Users will respect you because of your ops.
  • IRC to serve as a good substitute for a social life.
  • Users will genuinely care about you as a person.

Unrealistic Expectations on deviantART

Under no circumstances should you expect:

  • Your inane drawings qualify as art.
  • Anyone outside your circle cares about your Sonic recolors.
  • Your photography is not kitsch.
  • Anything you post is not kitsch.
  • Photoshopping "skills" make up for your deficiencies in other areas.
  • You are an expert at Photoshop.
