Summary

/v/ is 4chan's video game board and the second most popular board, just behind /b/. It is known for generating tons of console war arguments, trolling, meme generating, and being very similar to /b/. There are many in jokes such as claiming that nobody on /v/ actually likes video games, blatantly posting non-video game-related content, and every user being a neckbearded basement dweller. Users typically refer to one another and themselves as "/v/irgins". /v/ also has an often tenuous relationship with /a/.

Origins

Although /v/ is one of the older boards in 4chan, its presence did not become apparent until somewhere around 2007. With the sharp decline of quality in /b/, many former /b/tards began to seek refuge in the other 4chan boards, formerly sporadically visited. Appropriately, /v/ was one of those places.

Since then, /v/ has become a major contributor of original content, and is credited for memes such as Rickroll and Trollface and dozens of wacky MS Paint comics not about relationships, things the current /b/ is lacking. This came at a cost, however, and /v/ is also never short on bad trolls, forced memes, and off-topic discussions.

Current status

/v/ remains one of the most popular boards on 4chan, and despite all the rage and trolling, /v/ somehow manages to maintain a sense of brotherhood.

The Apocalypse of /v/

Madness.
Of course, many /v/irgins quickly retreated to /a/.

>implying /v/ didn't die a long time ago. After many mindless wars with Reddit, on February 12, 2012, the mods of /v/ (or lack thereof) decided to screw with the /v/irgins and implode the board. Upon entering the site, one would be greeted with "GOTTA GO FAST - YOU'RE TOO SLOW /v/" as well as autoplaying an ear rape remix of the Green Hill zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, a reference to /v/'s current failure. While the board hasn't been put out of its misery, many /v/irgins decided to take refuge on other boards, especially one of /v/'s arch rivalz, /a/. Thus began the raiding, trolling, and lack of video game and Gabe Newell discussions on the anime board, much to the dismay of /a/. /v/ as a result went mad, and hell was raised.

Instead of having 15 post pages, it was increased to over 120 pages.

The apocalypse was rather short lived as the board went back to normal, though notable enough to catch one's attention. The scary autoplay was removed, peace was restored, and /v/ went back to their usual threads.

/vg/

Some of the nicer feedback for /vg/ that didn't include death threats and calling moot a "greedy Jew" and other vulgar names.
/vg/'s ill-fated introduction.

The day after /V/alentine's Day of 2012, after everyone was too busy wiping their tears from their bitter loneliness, Moot came along and brought some changes to /v/. After getting fed up with the thousands of large video game general threads on /v/, Moot decided to make one of the few new boards being introduced to 4chan at the time be about video game general threads, christening the board as /vg/. As if /v/ wasn't already reputable for not discussing video games, this only ensured the final nail in the coffin of that claim. Regardless, /vg/ has a higher post and image cap limit with only 6 pages and 180 threads, ensuring that there wouldn't be a need of making a TERA general thread that would inevitably end up turning into GW2 vs TERA troll war every 10 minutes or so. In the process, Moot hopes to fix some of the major problems with as well as its moderation (lies).
