Vkontakte (VK) is a Russian equivalent of Facebook. It is very popular in countries in the former Soviet Union including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.
Origins
Pavel Durov, a student at Saint Petersburg State University (the Saint Petersburg in Russia), registered the domain name in 2006. After his graduation he opened the site for beta testing.
Current status
Still kickin'.
Facts
- Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the Boston bombers, had an account on this site. He posted a picture of himself and his friends at Times Square on this site; two of the friends in the picture and one other friend were nabbed by the feds for conspiring to remove evidence and lying to investigators.
