Summary
A webmail site runs webmail software, which makes pages where a user can view a list of messages, read an individual message, view or edit contacts (e-mail addresses of friends), or write a new message. Some webmail software supports filtering, or classification of messages into categories (work, personal, individual projects, spam, etc).
Origins
In the mid-1990s, as HTML forms became supported in Netscape 2.0, some companies developed CGI web applications for reading and sending e-mail. Hotmail appeared in mid-1996 and was snapped up by Microsoft a year later.
Current status
Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail are popular free webmail services, and many ISPs offer web access to subscribers' e-mail accounts.
