Summary
Weev is the Internet handle for Andrew Allenesch Auernheimer, a computer security expert and noted proponent of Internet trolling. Weev's computer security group, Goatse Security, was responsible for the incident in 2010 where millions of iPad users' email addresses were scraped from poorly-secured AT&T servers. Weev is also a Christian.
Rise to fame
Weev has been internet-famous for some time. He was a prominent member of the GNAA trolling organization. His "iProphet" videos, a series of humorous sermons on YouTube, got him a lot of attention and are a continuing part of his legacy.
Goatse Security's actions are what thrust him into the old-media limelight. In an attempt to not only garner publicity but also to demonstrate proper security to AT&T, Goatsec members used a public feature on AT&T's website to collect millions of email addresses belonging to 3G iPad owners, including famous folks like Rahm Emanuel (now mayor of Chicago, at the time White House Chief of Staff). After AT&T fixed the problem, Goatsec broke the story to Gawker (this was obviously a big deal). Soon afterwards, local police arrested Weev at his Fayetteville, Arkansas home on drug charges. All of his computer equipment was seized by the FBI, the U.S. national law enforcement agency, while Weev was held in the Logan County jail with no public defender and no notice of what his search warrant had actually said. The local drug charges were eventually dropped. At the same time, Weev and a fellow Goatsec member were indicted by the FBI for computer fraud relative to the scraping of AT&T's website.
Current status
After a few yearsto await the conclusion of his case regarding the stolen iPad emails, weev has been sentenced to 41 months in prison on March 18, 2013. In addition to prison for over three years, Weev will also be ordered to pay $73,000 in restitution to AT&T.
Court Case
On November 20, 2012, the jury came to a conclusion (a rather stupid one) and Weev was found guilty in federal court in New Jersey of one count of identity fraud and one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. On Twitter, Weev told his supporters not to worry as he plans to appeal.
