White knighting
The act of defending an internet celebrity in hopes that the defense will be repaid with recognition.
Summary
White Knighting or "WKing" is a phenomenon found upon every corner of the internet. When an internet celebrity, camwhore, or pretty much anybody with breasts is thrown into a flame war or is attacked by trolls, a white knight or two will inevitably appear to rescue the damsel in distress. While they will adamantly deny it, most white knights defend the girl in question in hopes that they will be rewarded with internet romance. Of course, this never happens, as all white knights are permanently trapped in the friend zone.
On DeviantArt, Furaffinity, and other art-based websites, white knighting is often done for different reasons. When a popular artist comes under troll fire, scores of white knights will swarm to the rescue. As expected, they do this in order to gain attention from their favorite persecuted artists, which leads to pageviews and perhaps even free art.
