Summary
A wiki refers to an online database that serves as an encyclopedia that stores information in a way that anyone can improve or change (i.e. OhInternet).
There are many different wiki software packages that one can use to create their very own wiki, but one of the most famous is MediaWiki. MediaWiki is used by the most famous wiki of all, That Other Wiki.
In short, anything that involves wiki, involves everybody.
Origins
In 1994 Ward Cunningham began developing WikiWikiWeb, the first Wiki. The name originates from the "Wiki Wiki Shuttle" at Honolulu Airport; Cunningham chose "Wiki" since it means "quick" in Hawaiian and sounds better than "QuickWeb," Ward based the wiki concept off of Hypercard, a program made by Apple. On 1995 WikiWikiWeb was introduced to c2.com, Cunningham's website.
Current status
Thriving... Wikipedia (called "TOW," "the other wiki" in many circles) is the most popular wiki worldwide.
