Summary
XKCD is self described as, "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math and language." Every cartoon consists of either stick figures or crudely hand drawn characters. Sometimes crudely hand drawn stick figures are present. Randall Munroe is the author. It is one of the few webcomics to be commercially successful.
Origins
Randall Munroe decided that he wanted to save some of the stuff in his old graphing paper notebooks, so he scanned several pages and put the comic-ish ones on a server. BoingBoing linked to him, and Munroe found oodles of readers. He decided to make more serious works, and he got even MORE readers. Soon it became a full fledged webcomic.
Current status
Up and running with consistent publishing.
