Summary
Yahoo! is one of the major internet portals (search, webmail, etc) in the United States and elsewhere.
Origins
David Filo and Jerry Yang started it in 1995. Yahoo has Yahoo! Answers, and Yahoo! had acquired Geocities. Geocities became increasingly irrelevant, and Yahoo! had all versions of Geocities, except for the Japanese version, shut down.
When Yahoo! debuted in the mid-1990s, it had a dominant position in the internet. By the late 1990s, along with Aol, Yahoo! and Geocities were among the most visited websites on the internet. Flash forward to 2010, and Yahoo! is now struggling against Google and Facebook, the new ten pound gorillas in the internet scene.
Current status
Still up. Outside of Japan, Geocities got shut down though.
