Sexual intercourse; catch-all term for adult aspects of the furry fandom.

The furry fandom is a very sexualized subculture. This is something that is impossible to deny, regardless of what some furries may assert. Sites like FurAffinity are a testament to this, with their galleries full of furry smut and adult art. There are IRC networks which are a hotbed of furry sexuality; in particular FurNet is well known for channels such as #maleyiff and #raisedtailscafe. It therefore follows that, like pretty much every other aspect of the furry fandom furries attempt to cutesy up, these adult aspects have had a profound aspect on the furry lexicon. Probably the most important and well known bit of furry sexual jargon is yiff, which serves as a very wide umbrella term for a number of different things.

Some argue that yiff, as a word, was first concocted by a roleplayer on FurryMUCK going by the name of littlefox as part of a simple language invented by himself as an expression of happiness, while others postulate that the word came into being the first time an artic fox figured out how to get laid. Either way, the word soon became synonymous with sexuality in the furry fandom, much to the enjoyment of some and the chagrin of others. It would not be unfair to say that the popularity of yiff in all its forms has much to do with the persecution complex many furries seem to suffer from, with the 2011 Furry Survey showing that the fandom typically feels that the public considers the fandom far more perverted than those on the inside do.

Common usage

A word with as broad a meaning as yiff has a fittingly broad number of applications, which for the layman can be categorized into either usage as a verb or an adjective/noun:

Yiff as a verb

In the generally accepted, contemporary context, yiff has essentially the same meaning as "sexual intercourse", except that it's been foxed up a bit to fit in more with the furry aesthetic.

Yiffy art

Yiff also serves as a blanket term for all kinds of adult art within the furry fandom. These can range from softcore images to explicit, hardcore art with tentacles, rape, vore and pretty much every other perversion under the sun (and probably a few others that aren't, too). Because most furry artists are amateurs the quality of much yiff is questionable, to put it politely, riddled with anatomical errors and other artistic malfeasances. However, there are a number of notable furry artists which are well known within the fandom for their more professional output, including ZEN and Zaush. Their art is pretty damn gay though.

There's also explicit literature which caters for the furry fandom, which again comes in varying shades of quality (leaning heavily towards the so-bad-it's-terrible side of the scale). Websites such as (the definitely NSFW) SoFurry have a craptonne of this kind of stuff, as does FurAffinity.
