Summary

This image of backpackers throwing their baby over a gully makes everyone all upset! The image shows two hikers throwing a baby across a gully, when it's cut in half it looks like they're throwing it off a cliff. Easy to photoshop and create outrage with.

Origins

The original baby-throwing image is taken from the Spring 1995 Patagonia outdoors catalog. The photo is credited to Greg Epperson.

The catalog's caption reads "Come to papa. Jordan Leads, lifting off from Sherry Leads, heads for a safe reentry into Jeff Lead's arms. Turtle Rock, Joshua Tree National Park, California."

There is a misconception that the original image is of the hikers throwing a backpack across, not a baby and the baby is part of the photoshop prank. In fact, the original catalog picture does show the hikers throwing the baby.

Current status

In late 2010, and early 2011, the image resurfaced at a variety of websites and became exploitable, with different versions becoming popular. Also frequently referred to as "extremely bad parenting" or "born free baby".
