A "big mama" is a person who censors content on Chinese message boards. Because a website would have trouble with the Chinese government if it hosted content that attacked the government's rule, the website employs people who have the job of cleaning up government-unfriendly content made by third party users. That way, the government will not go after the website.
Sometimes there are so many users that the big mamas have trouble keeping up with them. After all, China has over one billion people, and more and more are using the internet.
Rise to fame
As more and more Chinese people used the internet, the government needed a way to enforce and protect its rule and yet allow people to participate in the lucrative internet moneymaking market. Hence, it enacted the Great Firewall and the big mamas.
