Summary
Chris Hansen is an old media troll and host of the hidden-camera investigation program To Catch a Predator which aired between 2004 and 2007. He baited unsuspecting sexual predators into traps set up by Dateline in concert with Perverted Justice. The predators were sourced from websites such as MySpace and Craigslist, ensuring Hansen a limitless supply of perverts.
Origins
The American television channel NBC aired a program called To Catch a Predator. The show was meant to catch would-be sex offenders by having an 18 year old pose as a younger teenager, chat online and wait to be procured for sex. The would-be predator would then be met by a camera crew and possibly criminal charges.
All of the would-be predators were snared in the same general fashion. A vigilante organization known as Perverted Justice would register Yahoo accounts posing as underaged girls (and sometimes boys). They would wait for a predator to initiate chat with them, and then to avoid claims of entrapment would act friendly but wait for the predator to broach the topic of sex. Oftentimes, this was brought up when the predator asks the "girl" if she's ever had sex, or what her bra size is. By this point, the predator has broken the law and stands to be arrested; however, for the sake of healthy television drama, they then invite the predator to a house, where a sting is conducted. The house is fitted with hidden cameras, and an actress (or actor) is hired to pretend to be the underage target. They talk to the predator for a couple minutes, at which point Chris Hansen emerges from around a corner, often with some remark aimed at letting the predator know that he has been listening to the conversation.
At first, the predator is rather confused, as Hansen doesn't identify himself for a couple of minutes, leaving the guy to wonder whether he's a police detective or a psychotic dad. He asks the predator questions like, "What are you doing here?", "What was your plan tonight?", and "What would have happened had I not been here?" Although sometimes the would-be predator breaks down in tears, they do attempt to lie most of the time, saying that they thought the girl was 18, or that they were just coming to hang out -- at which point Chris Hansen reveals that he has the chat transcript, along with all the smelly things the predator had said they hoped to do with a 13-year-old girl. Then he reveals that he is Chris Hansen, they are on TV, and men with video cameras emerge (this is solely for drama, since everything is already being taped). Chris Hansen gives them one last opportunity to talk to him, and then tells them they are free to go. Spoiler alert: the police are outside, armed with tasers and prepared to tackle him as soon as he walks out. In certain instances, they are disguised in a suit of vegetation, making it appear as though the predators are being attacked by a plant monster.
The show met a lot of criticism though and claims of entrapment caused many charges to be dropped. On one known occasion, a predator, who was caught out by the show, committed suicide, leading to a lawsuit brought forward by his sister, which was later "amicably resolved" outside of court.
Rise to fame
The show became popular amongst members of anonymous, due to their love of trolling, using the internet, and their unnerving obsession with pedophilia.
The show was allegedly canceled because it became too popular, making it difficult to find any predators stupid enough to go to the house where the show was filmed.
Current status
While no new episodes of "To Catch a Predator" have been shot since December 2007, anonymous still frequently reference the show and its host.
To Catch Chris Hansen Cheating
In late June, 2011, Chris Hansen was caught cheating on his wife with a 30-year-old Florida news intern named Kristyn Caddell. There is video forthcoming from the National Enquirer magazine.
