In a nutshell, a furry is a person with an interest in anthropomorphic (human-like) animals. This can range from an innocuous hobby to a full-blown fetish.

A full explanation of what a furry is having to explain the fetishistic aspect of it. To put it bluntly: Ever see Disney's Robin Hood? You know, the one with the animals that act and sort of look like people. Well, imagine people pretending, mainly through online role-play, that they look like that. Then imagine a large amount of these people using their personas (called fursonas in the furry subculture) to role-play sex. Then imagine some of these people taking the role-play out of the chatrooms and into the real world, by making full-sized animal costumes (called a Fursuit) that look like baseball mascots. Then imagine again some of these fursuiters having sex with each other all while roleplaying their animal fursonas. And don't forget to imagine the animal sounds and animal characteristics during this! This is called yiffing. And that, dear reader, that is the furry fandom.

Before going any further, it is important to note that not all furries participate in the sexually aspect of this fandom. Just the vast majority of them. And neither do they all go fursuiting. Really, only a few do since these costumes are costly and time consuming, but a good amount would do it if they could. Further more, only a small percentage actually have the sex in these costumes, since that is considered "taboo" in the furry fandom. Most tend to keep the porn confined to the internet (though that doesn't mean they keep it in their section of the internet). And despite them dressing up as animals, furries don't advocate bestiality. At least the vast majority of them.

Typically, furries like to engage in forms of art or other creative media to share images and ideas of their "fursona" and such. Logically, they have seen the Internet as a means to share these original creations. Several sites, such as FurAffinity, have sprouted to cater solely to the furry demographic to share their art and smut. But despite their furry websites, the furry "art" often times still spills out, very much to the great ire of the Internet, and more specifically /b/. In fact, fur-porn would earn many a few b-tards a hit from the banhammer during the reign of infamous mod W.T. Snacks.

Due to the insulated and accepting nature of the furry fandom, a good amount of furries having duel-fetishes have popped up. Ranging from Furries having feet fetishes, poop fetishes, to pee fetishes, to macro and micro fetishes, and to even babyfurs (furries who roleplay animals in diapers who still wet themselves). As such, it is not uncommon for non-furry viewers to have their childhoods ruined by furry art. Mainly because many of the shows and movies you watched as a kid had anthropomorphic animals in them. And since the furry fandom consists largely as socially maladjusted, sexually repressed, and lonely people... Well... they like to draw your childhood icons "yiffing" in their particular brand of bizarre fetish while having little regard of where to post it. Or even if they should.

Along with this maladjustment and this insulation, the Furries can be quite the drama magnets. Screaming "Fursecution!"(furry for persecution) at being trolled, their particular fetish being "marginalized", someone closing their account, or anything really, there is never any shortage of furry drama. This drama has gotten much better over the years as more and more level-headed people keep getting involved with the fandom, and have subsequently ostracized the crazier aspects of the fandom to keep more aligned to being a hobby with some sexual aspects. One example being the banning of cub art on Furaffinity, with cub art being animal babies "doing the deed". Therefore, they furry fandom has ceased being completely insane and sex minded.

Though no matter how one looks at them to say that they aren't a little bizarre is quite a stretch. But to each their own, I guess.
