Summary

Google, one of the chief contributions of the internet from the United States, is the phone book of the internet. Its mission is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," and their main corporate tenet is "Don't be evil."

Origins

Founded in 1998, Google.com set itself ahead of the pack of competing search engines by implementing a PageRank system, which initially scored the importance of websites by assessing how many links they had.

Current status

Google remains relevant by continually refining their search algorithms, and by providing the leading edge of cloud computing access through Gmail, Picasa, and Google Docs; Chrome, its very own web browser, and Chromium, their proprietary OS. It also has a social networking site, Orkut, that is popular in Brazil and India.
