Summary

In Soviet Russia... or the Russian Reversal is an extremely easy to make joke. This comes in two varieties: sense and nonsense. The sense versions are those that make fun of the Russian Police State while being clever. The nonsense versions work as a reference to the above jokes, and works simply by reversing a piece of common knowledge.

In America, you listen to man on radio. In Soviet Russia, man on radio listen to you!

—Sense

In Soviet Russia, car drive you!

—Nonsense

Like many memes, its spread is likely largely due to how easy it is to recreate. For example, you are reading this article right now. You must be in America.

Origins

These reversal based jokes originate from Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff. The original was "In America, you can always find a party. In Russia, Party always finds you." These jokes actually made sense and referred to Russia as an Orwellian land. As he made these jokes in the 1980's, he just said in Russia, rather than in Soviet Russia, as the distinction was not necessary. Since the Soviet Union dissolved and the Cold War ended, Smirnoff and his jokes became less relevant. He can now be seen in Branson, Missouri.

Current status

In Soviet Russia jokes have been seen on The Simpsons and Family Guy and can be seen anywhere with people who quote these shows (everywhere).
