Summary

Japan, the land of the rising sun, is the world's third largest economy (China recently eclipsed them), the home of anime and manga, and also the home of 2ch. It's also the only country that still has GeoCities. Being the gilded temple of anime and video games, Japan is largely entrenched in internet culture by giving countless people their childhoods and even their current pastimes and hobbies. As such, it's impossible to imagine an internet without Japan.

Origins

In the medieval era, Japan was a series of warring states, held loosely together by a military general (known as a shogun) and an Emperor. That is, when they weren't dead. Eventually the Tokugawa shogunate unified the country and ruled it for around 300 years. During these years, Japan was very hostile to outside states, not even trading with the outside world, and it was here Japan developed much of its unique culture. The United States's Commodore Perry forced Japan to open itself to outside influences in 1853. The Tokugawas lost power and the imperialistic Meiji government appeared. Japan began to industrialize and westernize, eventually to the point where they defeated Russia. Japan fought for the Allies in World War I, but felt it was not given enough credit for its efforts. In World War II Japan fought for the Axis, invading the Pacific islands and coasts. The United States defeated Japan by dropping a two nukes on Japan, and in the rebuilding process/foreign occupation Japan gained a tech economy. As the information age came to be, modern Japanese popular culture, including anime, manga, and video games appeared.

When anime and manga became really popular in the west, the conventions of anime and manga seeped into western internet culture. Other trends that originated in Japan became popular in the west, i.e. 2ch lead to 4chan.

Current status

Still active, still in an economic recession, still producing Pikachus and Totoros for all
