Summary
John K. was one of the many poor, downtrodden cartoonists working in the 70s and 80s, when every cartoon on the air was basically a 30 minute toy commercial. After rising to fame with a hilarious family-friendly series that put Nickelodeon on the map (The Ren & Stimpy Show), John's head swelled up until it reached enormous proportions.
There's some truth to his gigantic ego, as most animation today is at least partly inspired by his work. His production system (outline to storyboard to layouts to Koreans doing inbetweens) is being copied by all the major networks to this very day, and his humor style influenced the cartoonists working today and consequently the cartoons on the air today (compare Ren & Stimpy to SpongeBob SquarePants).
He currently can't get a job because he's difficult to work with, so he spends his time ranting on his blog about the state of animation. It is highly recommended that you just watch his hilarious cartoons and don't delve into the depths of his egomania (in other words, stay away from his blog). Even though his ego is swollen and his opinions are somewhat controversial, he IS a creative genius and should be respected as such. After all, it's only natural one grows a big ego after influencing an entire artform.
John K. puts emphasis on art and acting, not just writing. The very expressions on the characters faces are humorous (see here.) Not only that, but he uses sound effects and voice acting to their full potential. He likes writing, but he says it's only one element of a good cartoon. He hates modern cartoons because they only treat writing with respect, while he puts 100% into every single element.
Origins
John K. worked as a layout artist on shows that he hated working on and that everyone else hated working on (or so he claims). He despises everything almost every cartoon he worked on prior to The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse (the precursor to Ren & Stimpy), which is ironic considering that he would've never gotten his big break if it weren't for his street cred.
Rise to fame
After spending years working in the dark ages of animation, John finally got a show picked up from Nickelodeon when they saw how enthusiastic he was, and by enthusiastic, I mean he acted out the entire episode in front of them, and got so excited his asthma inhaler flew across the room and hit the president of Nickelodeon in the face. The Ren & Stimpy Show was a huge success, but John K. was a slob and took forever on deadlines, not to mention the fact that he insisted on keeping things in Nickelodeon felt were too grotesque for children. Despite how successful his show was, Nickelodeon eventually got fed up with his shit and tried to continue the show without him. Unfortunately, a good chunk of his loyal crew left with him, even though John was the only one they wanted to get rid of. As a result, the show began to suck.
Despite John K's talent, lady luck was out to get him. He created a hilarious comic book series for Dark Horse, but it was canned because there wasn't a market for non-superhero American comics. He got a Fox Kids called The Ripping Friends, but his expressive art was so HORRIBLY butchered by the executives in order to "look more like a normal cartoon", that almost all the entertainment value was gone.
Ren & Stimpy was brought back as an adult show in 2003 with him at the helm, and while it was actually pretty funny, people got all butthurt because "OMFG REN AND STIMPY ARE GAI NOW". Yeah, like they weren't always gay.
Current status
Despite being hilarious and talented, John K. is a dick. He voices his air-headed opinions on his blog every other day. Let's hope sometime soon he stops complaining and starts doing what he does best.
Today, he updates his blog whining about cartoons and talking about the history of animation. While he does give facts, he also has rose-colored-glasses when it comes to nostalgia. Due to this, he's been mocked repeatedly.
