Summary
Keyboard Cat is a video of a cat, apparently playing a keyboard. Although the video was videotaped in 1986, it became an internet meme in 2009. Keyboard Cat is often used at the end of videos depicting some instance of failure, sometimes with the tagline "Play him off, Keyboard Cat".
Origins
In 1986, Charlie Schmidt videotaped his cat, "Fatso" in a child's garment, and manipulated the cat to make it appear that Fatso was playing the keyboard. Apparently, the video was made for a television program along the lines of America's Funniest Home Videos.
On June 7th, 2007, Charlie Schmidt, Fatso's owner, uploaded the video to the then fledgling YouTube, where it gathered some views. Then in 2009, the rights to the video were obtained, and the video was used in a "Greatest Viral Videos" aggregation.
Since then, the video is used as a punchline for videos depicting humorous incidents.
Current status
Keyboard Cat has only enjoyed meme status since 2009, but regularly makes appearances, especially the Play Him Off, Keyboard Cat variant. He has since sold out and is now being used to sell nuts.
