Summary
A combination of LOL and WUT, LOL WUT is a clever way to express bewilderment at an inane statement. LOL WUT has long been a phrase, but became a meme when it began to be paired with images in early 2007. The most widely known example of this is The Biting Pear of Salamanca, by DeviantArt user Ursulav.

Origins
On February 27th, 2006, DeviantArt surreal artist Ursula Vernon posted The Biting Pear of Salamanca to her DeviantArt account. On February 2, 2007, an entry was made to Urban Dictionary for LOL WUT, which specifically mentioned the pear. On February 8, 2007, the domain name lolwut.com was registered. On March 31, 2007, a YTMND flash was made.
Current status
LOL WUT is considered a classic meme, and its usage is robust. LOL WUT is still a popular phrase on the internet, and the LOL WUT pear is well known.
