Summary

Metroid is a series of science fiction action-adventure games by Nintendo featuring female bounty hunter Samus Aran. In almost every game, Samus fights against Space Pirates (lobster aliens) who killed Samus's parents in an attack on her home colony. Samus was soon adopted by the Chozo and raised among them. They taught Samus how to fight and gave Samus her weapons and armor. Samus then makes it her life mission to stop the Space Pirates from completing their goals, usually consisting of trying to use a parasitic species, known as Metroids, to take over the universe. The series is known for being one of the few major games series to have a female lead, and essentially the only one not having their female lead completely sexualized by developers. Indeed, those who did not complete the first game quickly enough would assume that Samus was a man, as the instruction manual stated that the bounty hunter was male.

The games series, more often than not, is developed not by Nintendo but by third-party companies such as Team Ninja and Retro Studios. This allowed for the game series to often experiment with new gameplay, such as evolving from a platformer to a first-person shooter. The Metroid series, at least the first couple, are popular as speedruns as early Metroid games gave different ending depending on how fast the player completed the game.

Origins

Conceived by Makoto Kano and Hiroji Kiyotake, the two wanted to combine the platforming elements of the Mario series with the open-ended exploration of the Legend of Zelda series. The first game, Metroid, was made for the NES.

Current status

While no game has been annouced, there are rumors of a new Metroid game called Metroid Dread haven been fully written and it only needs to be developed.
