Summary

Nmap is a security auditing tool that is used as a port scanner. Ranking high in both efficiency and popularity, Nmap is a key part of any hacker or script kiddy's toolkit, it is also used in penetration testing, but seriously, who's the majority?

Nmap is most often used to scan a variety of ports on a computer to check for vulnerable services running on them. Nmap's scan options range anywhere from stealth options, to OS detection, service scan, and version detection. Nmap's core parts are written in C/C++, while Python is incorporated into it

Nmap has even squeezed its way into popular culture, making a cameo in "The Matrix Reloaded"

Current status

Nmap 5.50 was released in January 2011, the project is still being worked on, and as it's open source, anyone may be able to help develop it
