Over 9000
An overly dramatic line from Dragon Ball Z.
- Date Discovered: 10/2006
- Discovered On: 4chan
Summary
This was taken from a conversation between characters in Dragon Ball Z, who used devices known as "scouters" to determine how powerful their enemies were. Upon first encountering Goku, Vegeta and Nappa have the following short exchange:
Nappa: "VEGETA! What does the scouter say about his power level?"
Vegeta: "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!" *crushes scouter*
Nappa: WHAT, NINE THOUSAND!? THERE'S NO WAY THAT CAN BE RIGHT!
The line was so ridiculously dramatic that it lent itself to being repeated for humorous effect.
Origins
Dragon Ball Z was originally produced and aired in Japan from 1989 to 1996, with the dubbed version being shown in the United States beginning in 1996, with the episode containing the line originally being shown in English on April 19, 1997.
Current status
Extreme overuse has made this an old meme and oftentimes it's used without any real context, often as a replacement for an arbitrarily high number. It is inadvisable to repeat this unless doing so would be relevant to a conversation, lest one be labeled a newbie or worse.
Facts
- The episode in question is number 28 of the first season.
- In the original manga, it was over 8000. That extra thousand just makes it that much more dramatic.
