Summary
Piracy often refers to copying and distributing things like video games, movies, etc. without permission. In many countries a lot of commercial goods are pirated; i.e. in China there are stores full of fake DVDs and CDs of movies and software, even entire fake Apple stores.
But the internet has become a major source of piracy. People use IRC and Usenet to download movies and software. Video games are easily found for free online. Peer-to-peer file sharing programs and bittorrent are also used. Episodes of anime and manga are easily found.
Origins
As computer capabilities improved and internet connections became robust, the old platforms of IRC and Usenet increasingly became used for software piracy. Napster was one of the first major peer-to-peer file sharing programs that had pirated software.
Current status
Despite the attempts of many organizations around the world (such as the MPAA and the RIAA of the United States) people still pirate stuff.
