Summary

Planking is a relatively recent internet and real-life meme which has reached considerable popularity especially in Australia. In a nutshell, planking is the act of laying down on your stomach in an uncomfortable spot and having your picture taken, which is then typically uploaded to social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter to alert the world to the fact that you're amused incredibly easy. The popularity of planking is likely attributable to the natural proclivities of humans towards being incredibly lazy as well as trying to find justification for said laziness under the guise of doing something legitimate such as being part of another boring internet sensation.

Origins

The roots of planking can be traced back to Tom Green, who first taped himself 'planking' in 1994 for a bit called "Will people stop and help you on the street?" that sadly never aired on television.

Also found in Japan, it was referred to as "The lying down game." Its popularity there spiked when it was featured on the NRL Footy Show early in 2011. Following the media exposure a fit of "monkey-see, monkey-do" has followed and not only have there been "Planking Associations" formed (the most prominent being the so-called Brisbane Planking Association) to promote the activity but other popular television programs have featured hosts and other staff planking, serving to embarrassingly perpetuate the trend in front of millions of people.

Fatalities

On the 15th of May planking claimed its first victim when a Brisbane, Australia resident attempted to plank on the rail of his apartment's balcony. While his devotion to the activity is commendable, his actions were questionable to say the least when one considers that he fell seven stories with the last thing to ever grace his sight being the cold, unforgiving pavement and death's subsequent release rushing up to greet him.

A few days later, a man valiantly attempted to qualify for this year's Darwin Awards by planking on a moving car. He fell off while the car was speeding away and hit the ground, which lead his friends to realise that there was something wrong with the entire idea to begin with.

Current status

The popularity of planking is still on the rise, but it is not without its detractors.
