Origins
"Science" has existed as a comedy meme long before it was picked up by the internet. It fits with too many standard comedy tropes to ignore; for example, using material which takes itself ultra-seriously and inserting absurdities has been a staple of British comedy since Monty Python, and radio shows like The Goon Show and Round The Horne before that.
The internet was already doing science with material like XKCD and the Weebl flash animation "Science" when the meme was codified in 2007 by the game Portal. Portal leaned heavily on catchphrases like "I'm doing science!" which both appealed to the collective hivemind's sense of humour and inserted a healthy dose of the black humour, meme references and creeping misogyny so beloved of /b/tards.
