A cult-like religious group known for a series of battles with hacktivist collective Anonymous.

Summary

The Church of Scientology is an infamous, yet popular religious group known for accusations of brainwashing new members, and murdering important members who leave the Church.

The CoS has been in numerous battles recently with infamous Internet activist group Anonymous. These political and legal skirmishes were the result of a leaked propaganda video and Scientology's attempts to remove it from the clutches of cause-concerned protesters on 4chan's /b/ board. This caused /b/ members to retaliate, under the Anonymous banner by protest and DDOS'ing of the Church's official site. These events were referred to by Chan users as Project Chanology.

Origins

Scientology was created by Ron L. Hubbard, a mediocre science fiction author, as a religious philosophy that would incorporate elements of his past work with spiritual cleansing method Dianetics.

Current status

Because of the media attention the protests garnered, many of the cultish elements of CoS have been exposed by researchers and journalists. Scientology has since been seen in a negative light, and despite celebrity support, is in a state of decline.
